The sun shone brightly on the running figure, but her clothing was lightweight enough to keep her cool. She could see the ghost town ahead that she had been told to find. I really hope he's here. If he died...well, I hope he died with water. When she reached the town, she ran into what looked like some sort of...shop? Whatever they were called; she didn't see many of them still functioning. This one was no exception. She sat down, out of the rays; she had been running all morning and only stopped once for a drink. She drank the rest of her bottle and put it back in her bag.
She stood up and looked through the store, not expecting to find anything. Her expectations were correct, of course; it had been picked clean. She walked back outside. "William Young! This is your mother speaking! Get out here! If this isn't your mother speaking, get out here anyway! I'll give you some he--" She stopped yelling. There was a body in the alleyway. She went over to it calmly. Bodies in alleys were nothing new.
"Is that you?" She took out and extended her stun rod. She poked the body with the tip, but got no reaction. That was enough for her. She collapsed the rod again and put it back in her pocket. "So, anything fun?" She searched all the pockets and found nothing of note. She slid the coat off the corpse. It was cold here? I'm surprised this body hasn't been cooked more than it has. She looked at the clothes; the body had decayed and grafted to them. Not worth saving. If you're going to die, leave something!" She looked at their face, finally. It didn't match the description The Light gave her. She stood up again and called for "William Young! Get out here! I'm here to deliver a message."

Will had hid behind the counter of the shop when he heard the first call. He had been hiding out for some time in this small ghost town. There wasn't much more he could do with how the world had turned up. He waited for people to wander through and took their supplies if he could. He has no objective in mind. No place to go to. All his safe houses were probably gone. There wasn't a place in the world he'd be safe for the moment. So he just made the ghost town his makeshift home.
He wasn't sure who it was. But if an enemy of his lived through this hell, he didn't really want to find out about it. So he hid, pulling out his desert eagle. He waited for the woman to leave, staying completely silent and then followed her out. At the second call, the barrel of a gun was placed at the back of her head. "You called?" Will asked quietly. He didn't leave anything to chance. If this was a ploy, he'd kill her. If there was actually a message...well, he'd see if it was worth hearing.

"I really hope you're William Young." She turned around and saw the gun and immediately replied with a raised eyebrow, but it hadn't been the first time she'd had a gun pointed at her. In an exasperated tone and to herself, she said, "Why doesn't anyone remember the phrase, 'don't shoot the messenger'?" She sat down on her knees, which were covered in dust anyway. "I've been told by The Light to come find you and bring you back to his Kingdom. It's only a day and a half run from here. Or would you prefer to walk?" She smiled. She had forgotten most people couldn't run like her.
"You're perfectly welcome to resist, but I'm not bringing you there when you're dead. I'll just tell The Light I found your corpse. But I really don't want to have to resort to that, so come with me. The Kingdom is big. Plenty of stuff to have. You'll at the very least have easy food and clean water." She smiled. "If you're hungry, I'll feed you. I can give you some water, too, but I want the bottle back after. Let's go back inside so it's not so hot."

Will's first instinct was to refuse. Why would this...'Light' person want him? But he rethought his position after that. Maybe this was his first chance at a job since the world went to Hell. Maybe he'd be able to actually take a stable place to live. With that in mind...
He holstered his gun, stepping away from her. "I suppose I'll go. Not like there's anything here," he said, holding his arms up to show the ghost city around him. "Would we leave now or would you like to rest before we go?"

Xiao smiled. "I knew you'd see it my way. All you have to do is follow me. I hope you have enough stamina to follow me running. If not, I'll try to take the straightest path I can." She stood up. "Do you have water? Want to share some bread? I have enough for a few days." She flipped open the top of her bag and took out a loaf of bread and a bottle of water. "You can have these for now, but save some bread. I don't get a lot. And I want the bottle back, so if you don't follow me, I will hunt you down. And...only take some of the bread. I need it." She tore a third of the bread off and threw it to Will.

Will took it and bit into it, eating his small portion before taking a sip of water and handing it back to her. "I'll be fine for the trip with that," he said, shrugging. "After you." He didn't take much to keep himself going. With his former career choice, he never had to. If it was a day and a half run, he'd be fine. Might have to take it slow after a bit, but he'd be able to keep up well enough. He was used to that kind of torturous exercise in his job.

Xiao smiled as she took her food and water back. She put it back in her bag. "You're just like The Light told me you'd be. I should have expected as much." She closed the bag and started running immediately. She made sure to run as directly as possible, but made sure she ran over the roads as much as possible so she wouldn't lose her footing in the sand. "You're going to need to keep up. I don't slow down." She yelled as she ran.

"Fair enough," Will said, mostly to himself. He darted off after her, catching up briefly after he started. He continued to keep up with her after that, leveling out at her speed. His clothing was light enough that it didn't weigh him down that much. It wouldn't be a problem to keep up with her for a while at least.

After hours of uneventful running, the sun started to go down. The sun being down was both good and bad; they wouldn't be able to see and it would be the best time to sleep, but it was also the best time to run. Sleeping in the sunlight was probably better, as they wouldn't risk freezing to death, but the best time to sleep would be when they reached another town. Xiao looked at Will. "It'll be another hour or two until we reach the next town worthy of sleeping in. Think you can keep up?"
(feel free to skip ahead to the next town after answering unless you don't want to. It's not a huge one, but there are some houses and shops, all abandoned, of course)

Will chuckled softly. "Guess we'll see," he commented. He kept moving at the same pace, not letting himself slow down. For the next two hours he ran. And they would finally see the abandoned town ahead of them. "That where we're staying, I'm guessing?" he asked, having not lost pace in the least since the start. His legs were tired, but he'd learned to ignore that. He could run easily enough for hours.
